Making a Difference and Building our Alma Mater

This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

See where God has brought us. What started as the Wesleyan Female Institution on January 1, 1880 – to give girls in Sierra Leone a sound Christian education – has evolved into present-day Methodist Girls High School. Over the years, MGHS has produced eminent and erudite ladies making an invaluable contribution in Sierra Leone, here in the U.S., UK, Canada, and worldwide.

The thought of forming own MGHSOGA California Branch was birthed around June/July 2018. Aunty Essie and I met at an event and started a conversation that led to us knowing that we were both alumni of MGHS. What a small world! We were very excited. I let Aunty Essie know that many other MGHS old girls were residing here in Southern California. Together with my husband, Reginald Samuels, who was part of our conversation, we started to name and count the number of MGHS old girls we knew already. As the conversation progressed, it was revealed that Reverend Olu Harding, Aunty Essie’s husband, is a product of our brother counterpart, the Methodist Boys’ High School (MBHS).

The mission of the MGHSOGA, California Branch is to come together, in love and harmony, to support our Alma Mater, the Methodist Girls’ High School, spiritually, educationally, and morally.

Currently, our Alma Mater operates on a two-shift educational system with about 2,300 pupils enrolled.  The Principals, Staff, and Board of Trustees have come to the realization that the two-shift system, while it makes room for most students who desire to gain a high school education, does not enhance the quality education that the school has always stood for. In short, the present pupils need more time at school!

As an association, we desire to join our Diaspora partners to meet this challenge. As an association, we are raising funds to fulfill our commitment to provide a classroom and the furniture to go with it, towards building additional classrooms and amenities for the quick return of our Alma Mater to a one-shift school system.

The school needs more resources – including more classrooms, more teachers, after school programs –to enhance the quality of education that the students deserve.

The two-shift system must be eradicated in terms of priority and long-term goal to reach out to our Alma Mater with a helping hand.

Let’s spread the word! This is our opportunity to come together as alumnae— to contribute to the tremendous growth and success of our Alma Mater.

Let us come together with one accord with love and commitment to positively impact this mission and vision. May we continue to embrace our High School’s Motto: “Honour Before Honours.”
